Here Are a Few Tips on How to Use Facebook

Senior_smiling-LR.jpgYou are constantly hearing about social media. You probably even have a lot of friends already using Facebook and encouraging you to create an account. If you aren’t familiar with Facebook and the concept of social media, the idea is a little daunting. However, Facebook is a great way to keep up with friends, family and even your local clubs. Here are a few tips to get you started on Facebook.

The first step is to create an account by providing the information requested on the Facebook home page. This includes your name, birthday and an email address. Using your maiden name if you’re a married woman helps old friends find you if they knew you before you married. After filling out all of the information, you need to confirm your account. An email from Facebook walks you through this.

Protect Your Information

Once you open your Facebook account, you need to set up your security so you can control who sees your information. Find the question mark on the top left-hand size of the page and choose Privacy Checkup. Facebook walks you through setting up your privacy.

Make a Friend

Use the search bar at the top of the page to find your friends by entering their name. When you find someone you know, click on their Facebook page and press Add Friend. Facebook can also use your email contact list to find people who you know.

Give Them a Piece of Your Mind

Now, that your account is private, and you have a couple of friends, it’s time to create a status. At the top of your news feed is a box. It says, What’s on Your Mind? You can write a status about your plans for the day, your grandchild’s birthday or something funny your spouse did and hit Post. You can also add pictures and videos from here.

Follow a Page

What you see on your Facebook feed comes from things your friends' post and pages that you like. What are pages? Well, companies, organizations and news channels create pages on Facebook for their fans to follow. Search for things you’re interested in seeing posts from, such as AARP, Caring Senior Service and your favorite actor, and click like on their main page.
